The sterile waiting room of Dr. Stevens’ practice didn't match the image of her that flooded Claire's memories. Claire recalled the terror she felt when Heather used to lock her in the supply closet. Now, here she was, in a session with the same person.

Dr. Stevens’ office was a haven. The view overlooked a park. Soft music played from hidden speakers. Heather, in a tailored suit, gestured toward a plush couch.

"It's been a while, Claire," Heather said with a gentle smile. She gave a little shrug, and then began describing to Claire a recent challenge she'd overcome, how she'd used her skills to come to a great conclusion. Claire watched her, a smile tugging at her lips.
