The hum of the refrigerator seemed to amplify the stillness in the apartment. Across the small kitchen, Olivia, always organized, was meticulously wiping down the counter. "It's just not practical, Ben," she'd said earlier, dismissing his suggestion for a fish tank with a wave of her hand. The thought of a pet, something to look after, to nurture, had been a bright spark in a world that had lately seemed rather dim.

He wandered into the living room, the space feeling vast and empty. He sat on the sofa, picking at a loose thread on the cushion. The TV remote lay beside him, untouched. He felt as though the very air around him was heavy, difficult to breathe.

He gazed out the window, watching the passersby on the street below. He felt a profound sense of loneliness, a feeling that intensified with each passing moment. He wrapped his arms around himself, a futile attempt to ward off the encroaching chill.
