The ringing phone had startled him. David hadn’t expected to find it, the forgotten device, lying next to his laptop. He’d seen the number flashing on the screen, a number he didn't recognize. Why hadn’t he answered? He replayed the scene in his head. The nervous fidgeting, the hurried excuses for leaving early, the way he'd avoided her gaze.

He felt something twist in his gut. A coldness spread through his chest. He clicked on the call log. The other person had called back three times. He felt utterly exposed, as if his most private thoughts were written in bold letters across the walls. He sat back, his breath catching in his throat.
