"No, no, no," whispered Mark, the words barely audible as he stared at the typed message. He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, leaving it standing on end. The letter lay open on his kitchen counter, the stark lines of its message practically glowing under the harsh fluorescent light. He felt an intense heat spreading through his face, his ears burning.

He felt the eyes of the other tenants on him, even though he knew he was alone. He imagined them talking about him, their voices laced with judgment. He closed his eyes, his mind a jumble of panic. He didn't want anyone to see him like this, vulnerable and defeated.
