The eviction notice seemed to leach the color from the room. The vibrant rug, the bright curtains, the books lining the shelves – everything suddenly appeared dull and lifeless. Emily felt a wave of dizziness wash over her. She gripped the edge of the kitchen counter, needing something to steady herself.

She thought of her friends, and the stories she would have to tell. She imagined their surprise, their pity. She never wanted them to know this. She'd rather disappear than have to face their faces, their carefully-modulated expressions. The thought of the packing, the hauling, the explaining filled her with a profound, almost paralyzing sense of dread.
