It was the birth certificate, tucked away in a dusty box in the attic. Sarah’s maiden name was different from the one he knew. And a quick search revealed a hidden trust fund, far beyond anything she had ever alluded to. The information seemed to scramble his thoughts, jumbling his reality. His vision blurred, and his skin prickled with a cold sweat.

He found her in the kitchen, preparing dinner. He felt a strange sort of disconnect, as if he were observing a stranger in his own home. He simply placed the document on the counter.
