The annual family reunion was in full swing, the air thick with the smell of barbecue and the sound of boisterous laughter. Michael, however, felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach. He'd just learned he had a condition so rare it was almost mythical.

He was hiding in the corner, trying to avoid any notice. He just wanted it to disappear. Suddenly, his cousin, Emily, approached, a plate piled high with potato salad. "Michael? You look pale. Are you okay?"

He mumbled something unintelligible, avoiding eye contact. She must have seen the medical folder in his hand.

Emily’s smile faded. “Is that… are you talking about…?” she whispered. Her voice was barely audible above the din of the party. “Because I… I was just diagnosed.”

He stared at her, the potato salad suddenly looking unappetizing. The noise faded away.
