The box itself wasn't remarkable, just a simple wooden crate. But the sheer improbability of it, the fact that he had absolutely no recollection of this, made his insides twist. He’d stumbled upon it while renovating the basement, a task he'd taken up as a means of forgetting everything else.

He slowly pried it open. Inside, nestled among other items, was a box of crayons and a drawing. It was a crude depiction of a house with a stick figure family out front. In the corner was a tiny, self-portrait of a much younger him.

He felt a sudden rush of warmth and then, a burning sensation in his cheeks. He quickly closed the box and hid it in the shadows.
