“Are you kidding me?” said Sarah to no one in particular, her voice tight with disbelief. This wasn't happening. Her son’s graduation was the most important event of the year, a milestone she'd planned to be there for. Now, the delay threatened to steal it away.

She felt a hollowness in her chest, a sense of falling, a freefall into the unknown. She crossed her arms, a protective gesture against an invisible threat. She walked to the window, watching the planes come and go.

She couldn't explain this illogical outcome. It seemed unbelievable.
