The clipboard felt like a lead weight in Maya's hand. Her name wasn't there. Not under Varsity. Not under JV. Nowhere. She stared at the paper as if it might magically change. Her breath hitched, a thin, shallow thing. The fluorescent lights of the gym seemed to hum, a discordant tune that grated on her nerves. She ran a hand through her sweaty hair, her fingers tangling in the damp strands. Confusion warred with a rising tide of… something else. Something cold and sharp. Coach Miller had given her a sideways glance after the announcements, a gesture she couldn't interpret.
