"Well, this is just peachy," she muttered, though there was no real conviction in her voice. The words felt hollow, inadequate to express the growing discombobulation that filled her. Her coworker, John, had slumped against the wall, seemingly resigned.

She ran a hand through her hair, finding it difficult to think clearly. Time seemed to slow. The elevator car felt smaller, the silence louder. She looked up at the ceiling, expecting an answer, expecting… something.

She felt a growing sense of displacement, as if she were viewing the world through a cracked lens. The familiar contours of reality had begun to warp and bend. She could not comprehend how this could have happened.
