Gemotions

Sarah felt a sudden pang in her chest as she sifted through the old shoebox, its cardboard edges softened with age. She sat on the floor of her childhood bedroom, the room now a storage area for forgotten items. The air in the room seemed to hold the echoes of laughter and whispered secrets.

Inside, she found a jumble of faded photographs. Her mother, in the stories, had always been a homebody, devoted to her family. One photograph showed her, mid-laugh, perched precariously on a motorcycle, wind whipping through her hair, a rebellious glint in her eye.

Sarah picked up another picture. This one depicted her mother, holding a guitar on a dimly lit stage, bathed in the glow of a spotlight. The family stories had never mentioned a musical side to her mother, or a life beyond domesticity. She held the photos close, a strange mixture of awe and bewilderment washing over her.
