Gemotions

The sunlight sliced through the dusty windows of the spare bedroom, illuminating motes of dust dancing in the air. Claire had been tasked with emptying this room, transforming it into a guest space. Every item felt like a judgement, a weight of expectation.

She unearthed a box, its contents a collection of her old diaries and letters. She'd agreed to this decluttering project with her husband, Mark. But inside, a letter she had written to a university professor years ago caught her eye. It was a complaint about an unfair grade.

She bristled at the memory. The professor was right, of course. She had been unprepared for the class. But still, the past felt like an affront. She crumpled the letter, then slowly smoothed it out again. She wouldn't let the past dictate her emotions now.
