The harsh fluorescent lighting of the pawn shop made everything seem clinical, cold. The harsh reality of his situation sunk in. Then he saw it: his grandmother's ring. The delicate setting, the sparkling stone… he recognized it immediately. The ring was a symbol of love, of permanence. He felt a deep, almost physical pain.
