The photographs were spread across the kitchen table, their faded colors mocking her. Emily felt a slow burn start in her chest. Her mother, the woman who had always lamented her failed dreams, was in these pictures, looking happy and fulfilled, doing things that contradicted the narrative she'd been told.

She pushed back from the table, suddenly unable to stay. The carefully constructed image of her mother as a victim felt like a personal attack.
