The irises, deep purple and regal, stood in a vase on the mantelpiece, a jarring contrast to the cozy familiarity of the living room. Emily felt a chill run down her spine. A sudden, deep disquiet settled over her.

She had told him not to. She had been clear. Yet, here they were, a blatant disregard for her wishes. She picked up the vase, her hands shaking slightly. She felt her pulse quicken.

She walked to the front door, hesitating before opening it, as if she could somehow send them back. The flowers were a clear violation of a boundary she had so carefully drawn.
