Gemotions

Michael whistled a happy tune as he unlocked his mailbox. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the old oak tree shading his small bungalow. Bills and a flyer for a pizza place – yawn. Then, a card. Plain envelope, no return address. He ripped it open with a flourish.

“Happy Birthday, you magnificent creature!” it read in a spidery script. A flush warmed his cheeks. He wasn't even expecting a birthday card! His shoulders relaxed, his back straightening like he'd just been told to stand tall.

He spun on his heel and bounded back towards the house, his eyes already searching for his phone. He wanted to call his mother, she always knew how to make a celebration, even a small, unexpected one, special. He had a feeling it was going to be a good day.
