He hummed a jaunty tune as he folded his laundry, the scent of fresh detergent a heady perfume. The acceptance letter had arrived yesterday, a crisp white rectangle offering him a new beginning. He was going to Oxford! He had a full ride. Every single worry that haunted his mind for the last few years had been eradicated, replaced by a sense of buoyancy, a lightness in his chest.

The email from the university, however, brought him crashing down to earth. "Administrative oversight." The words swam before his eyes. His scholarship, his golden ticket, was destined for someone else. He reread the email, hoping the words would shift, reform, offer a different conclusion. They didn’t.

He immediately reached for the phone. "This just can’t be," he said, his voice brimming with a vibrant energy. "There must be some way to fix this." The administrator on the other end gave a curt response. He didn’t care. His mind was already racing, forming contingency plans, plotting how to overcome this stumbling block. The future felt within his grasp again.
