He stared out the window, the city lights blurring through unshed tears. The acceptance email for James felt like a punch to the gut. The world, once vibrant and full of possibility, now appeared gray and lifeless. He'd done everything right, had followed all the steps, had believed in himself.

He felt a crushing weight in his chest. His hands clenched into fists, nails biting into his palms. He wanted to lash out, to scream at the unfairness of it all. He sat down heavily, the anger a dull ache in his bones.
