The vibrant colors of the art gallery blurred as Chloe focused on the scene before her. The man, Mark, whom she'd been dating for a month, was gazing intently at a woman with flowing dark hair. The woman was gazing back at him with a similar look, and, with a jolt, Chloe realized that the man was showing her a piece of jewelry that looked suspiciously like a gift she had given him last week.

Chloe’s vision tunneled. Her hands felt numb. She wanted to scream at the top of her lungs, to make them both disappear. She took a step forward, then another, the polite gallery crowd becoming a sea of indistinct faces.
