The announcement was like a physical blow. The air rushed out of her lungs. Amelia stared, unblinking, at the words on the screen, disbelief warring with a rising tide of fury. It was a joke, a cruel, elaborate joke.

She felt her face flush, heat spreading from her cheeks to her chest. Her fingers fumbled with her phone, almost dropping it in her lap. She wanted to scream, to lash out.

She pushed back from her desk, the squeak of the chair a small explosion in the quiet office. She needed space. To think. To process. The thought made her snort with derision. There was nothing to process.
