The sheer magnitude of the things she had to do, the emails, the calls, the meetings. She had to run. She was drowning. She needed air. The constant demands on her time, the relentless pressure to succeed. She suddenly felt dizzy. She moved as if in a dream. She was drawn to a booth with old, discarded toys.

And there, in a tattered heap, was Buttons. Her little bear. She stopped short. Her breath hitched in her throat. Her vision tunneled. She felt a sharp pang of both joy and sadness. All the feelings she had been trying to ignore erupted inside her.

“How much for the bear?” she croaked, the words barely audible. The man running the sale, oblivious to the emotional turmoil he had unleashed, named a price. She didn't hesitate. She had to have him.
