“No, no, no,” she whispered, the words barely audible, a fragile defense against the onslaught. She reread the report, each line a fresh stab. Her hands shook uncontrollably, the paper rustling like autumn leaves in a gale. A cold sweat erupted on her skin.

She felt a strange sense of unreality, as if she were trapped inside a poorly made film. The faces of her family, the memories she cherished, now seemed filtered through a distorted lens. She wanted to scream, to lash out, to shatter the illusion that had become her life.

She turned away from the computer, searching for a place to hide, a dark corner where the truth couldn’t reach her.
