The letter arrived, crisp and official, detailing the gruesome discovery in the basement – a secret room, a captive. Jessica felt a cold wave wash over her. She crumpled the paper in her hands. She couldn't breathe.

She stared at the basement door, the wood suddenly menacing. She imagined the darkness within, the echoes of unseen horrors. Her stomach churned. She ran a hand over her face, trying to calm herself.

She backed away from the door, her movements frantic. She needed to be away from it, away from the house, away from everything. She felt like she was trapped in a nightmare. She needed to tell someone. She couldn't.
