He read the notice, the words swimming before his eyes. The implications were like a lead weight in his stomach. He blinked rapidly, trying to clear his vision, but the print remained distorted, each letter mocking him. He pushed his chair back from the kitchen table, the sudden movement causing a sharp pain in his chest.

He ran his hands through his hair, a gesture of frustration and bewilderment. He wanted to scream, to run away, to disappear. The thought of the changes, the uncertainty, the upheaval, was almost unbearable. He could not think straight.

He stood up, his legs shaky, and stumbled to the window, the city lights a blur of noise and chaos. He felt utterly lost.
