She pulled the curtains shut, shutting out the sun. The sudden dimness didn't soothe her. Instead, it intensified the knot in her stomach. She hated confrontations; yet, this fence felt like a direct, unwanted challenge.

She sat on the sofa, clutching a cushion as if it were a lifeline. She replayed the conversation, the casual mention of the new structure, her own inadequate response. She had to speak up. She wanted to yell, to argue, but the thought of the awkward conversation tied her tongue.

The world seemed to shrink around her, and her breathing became shallow and rapid. Her heart raced, as if she had just run a marathon.
