The blood was roaring in Sarah’s ears. She felt her face flush, heat rising up her neck. She had rehearsed this moment a hundred times in her head. "Ben, it's me. Sarah." Ben, leaning against the doorway of the bakery, looked at her questioningly. "I... I don't remember you." His words were like a physical slap. She felt a tremble start in her knees. She felt sick. Everything around her felt like it was moving in slow motion. The smell of fresh bread suddenly made her want to vomit. She turned and ran, her legs pumping, away from the bakery and the crushing reality.
