The driveway yawned open, a gaping void where his car had been. He’d gone inside only for a minute. A trick, a setup. They were watching him. He could feel it. He began to pace, his steps erratic.

He peered out the window, every direction. The trees seemed to lean in, their branches like skeletal fingers. The wind rustled the leaves, whispering words he couldn’t understand, words about him. He clenched his fists, knuckles white.

He considered the possibilities, running through them like a desperate game. He had to be smart, to be careful. He looked for a note, any sign. There was nothing. He moved the chairs to block the windows.
