The newspaper crinkled as Mark lowered it. His keys dangled from his fingers as he stepped onto the porch. No car. He blinked, unsure he was awake. He took another deliberate breath, and walked back inside, closing the door softly.

He decided to investigate. He called the number on the sign, the voice on the other end confirming his vehicle was now impounded. The explanation was convoluted, involving a misread street sign. He listened, interjecting only to confirm details, his tone even.

He hung up. He decided to walk to the nearest cafe. He ordered a black coffee and a croissant. He watched the world pass by through the window. It would be a bit of a trek, but that was fine. The sun felt warm on his face, the coffee tasted perfect, the delay would not ruin his day.
