The lawyer had warned her that she didn't have to be there. But Eleanor knew she had to. She sat in her car, the engine idling, watching the workers milling about the property, finalising their preparations. The end was near.

The familiar sights and sounds of her childhood washed over her. The swing set, the overgrown garden, the chipped paint on the window frames. Each detail sparked a memory, a story.

Eleanor took a deep breath, and turned off the engine. She opened the car door and stepped out. She walked slowly toward the garden gate, noting the familiar path that had been walked for so many years. She closed her eyes. She was ready.
