“Forty-five dollars,” she heard the elderly woman say, her voice cracking as she examined the teddy bear. He was perched on a table, amongst other children’s toys. He had a patch over his left eye, and a slightly torn ear. Sarah’s heart quickened.

“That’s… that’s a fair price,” she agreed quickly, reaching for her purse. The woman looked at her, then back at the bear.

“You have a special fondness for this fella?” The woman’s gaze was discerning.

“He was…important to me,” Sarah admitted, clutching the bear. She felt a lightness in her step as she walked away.

The other yard sale shoppers looked on with interest. The teddy bear was the most valuable item she had sold all day. And, seeing the teddy bear in her arms, a certain joy washed over her.
