He had been waiting for this. He'd felt it in his bones.

Michael, leaning against the now secure fence, heard the familiar clatter of paws on the pavement. Sure enough, there was Max, his neighbor's terrier mix, once again on the loose. He smiled, a slight twitch at the corner of his lip.

He’d known, of course, that Max would try to dig under the fence. He’d carefully buried the chicken wire. He watched the dog sniff and paw with frustration, the wire an invisible barrier to his ambitions.

As Max's owner, Mr. Thompson, ran over, face flushed, Michael just pointed towards the dog and gave a small shrug. He didn't even need to say anything. He had outsmarted that little dog.
