She unfolded the paper, its sharp creases biting into her fingers. Her chest swelled with a familiar warmth. The landlord, that pathetic excuse for a human, thought he could intimidate her? The audacity! She tossed the notice onto the kitchen counter, the cheap laminate groaning under the weight.

She grabbed her phone and snapped a picture, sending it to her lawyer with a brief, “See? They can’t win.” Her phone buzzed almost instantly with an emoji that was like her.

She hummed a jaunty tune as she pulled on her favorite boots, the leather worn and softened from years of use. Leaving this dump was long overdue. Finally, the universe was catching up. She grabbed her keys, her shoulders squared, and headed out the door. The world was her oyster.
