The flimsy envelope felt ludicrous in his hand. He’d expected something more substantial, more… impressive. He glanced around the cramped apartment, the chipped paint, the sagging couch. A small, almost involuntary laugh escaped his lips. They thought this would scare him?

He ran a hand through his hair, smoothing it back. He felt the familiar tingling in his fingertips, the feeling of anticipation. He'd been playing a very long game, and the final piece had just been placed. He’d orchestrated every event, every delay, every missed payment. This was the culmination of months of planning, each detail meticulously executed.

He had a final drink. He poured it into a large glass, and he swallowed it whole. He felt no remorse.
