The weight of the silence in the car was almost unbearable. He had watched her, from the corner of his eye, as she drove home. She'd been on the phone again, as if every second was a battle.

He didn't know what to say, what to do. His hands were clammy, and he kept fidgeting with the seatbelt. He had asked her a few questions, but she had said nothing.

They pulled into the driveway, and he watched her get out of the car. There was a look in her eyes that he had never seen before, a strange, impenetrable mask. He felt adrift, lost in a sea of unspoken words.
