The restaurant was crowded, but David didn’t notice the ambient noise. He was fixated on his girlfriend, Chloe. She’d been unusually quiet throughout the meal, her eyes darting around the room. He’d tried to make conversation, but her responses were clipped.

He excused himself to go to the bathroom. Returning to the table, he heard her on the phone. The language she was speaking was unfamiliar. It was… his grandmother’s language.

He froze, his hand still on the back of his chair. He slowly sat down, his heart racing. When she hung up, she looked up and saw him. Her face went pale.

"David," she began, but she didn’t finish. She just looked away.
