The old house was eerily silent, the kind of silence that pressed in on you, thick and heavy. Amelia wandered aimlessly from room to room, her footsteps muffled by the thick carpets. Her brother, Daniel, was on the phone, arranging for the utilities to be switched over.

She picked up a framed photograph from the mantelpiece, a picture of her grandmother smiling, taken decades ago. She held it close, trying to remember the woman in the picture, but all she felt was a strange, disquieting hollowness.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She could feel a strange tightening in her chest, like an invisible weight. She opened her eyes. What was she supposed to do now? She didn't know.
