Gemotions

The aroma of dinner filled the kitchen, but she had no appetite. She watched him across the kitchen island, his back to her, and felt a strange sense of disquiet. He'd been secretive lately, always with his phone glued to his ear, hurrying away to take calls.

She took a slow sip of water, the cool liquid doing nothing to quench the fire in her chest. Each movement he made, each word he spoke, seemed to carry a hidden meaning, a subtle deceit.

She cleared her throat. “That was a long call,” she said, her voice sounding unnaturally high. He turned, a flicker of something she couldn’t quite decipher flitting across his face before he smiled, all bright teeth and practiced charm.
