The clatter of the chains and the roar of the diesel engine. The image was burned into his memory. He stood frozen, watching the tow truck disappear down the street. It was his father’s car. It was all he had left.

The loss felt heavier than the car itself, a crushing weight in his chest. He walked back to the house, each step slow, heavy, as though wading through thick mud. The silence of the empty driveway was deafening.

He sat on the porch, staring at the space where the car had been, and let the grief wash over him. Each memory came flooding back, each happy time. Each tear that had been shed. All of it, just gone.
