Gemotions

He stretched, the muscles in his back protesting mildly after the long drive. Leo had spent the last five years in a tiny apartment, crammed with the detritus of a life barely lived. Now, he stood in his childhood bedroom, the familiar blue paint and posters of long-forgotten bands a comforting backdrop. He ran a hand through his hair, a smile pulling at his lips.

“Well,” he said aloud, the sound of his own voice strangely satisfying, “time to unpack.” He surveyed the boxes stacked haphazardly near the door, a sudden surge of energy coursing through him. He ripped open a box and began to sort, discarding old bills and worn-out clothes.

Downstairs, his parents were already in their usual routine of tending to the garden. Leo paused in the doorway and watched them. They seemed smaller, somehow, but their laughter filled the air. He felt a quiet joy bloom in his chest, a sense of belonging he hadn’t anticipated.

Later, he fell asleep easily, the familiar creaks and groans of the house lulling him into a deep, dreamless sleep.
