"Well, this is going to be interesting," Clara muttered to herself, staring at the invitation to both her and her friend David's birthday parties. She stretched, and every joint seemed to pop with an unexpected ease. She felt a kind of buoyancy, a lift in her chest that she associated with freedom. David's was a formal affair, which was not her thing at all. This year she had decided to do her own thing.

She took a deep breath, savoring the cool air that filled her lungs. She decided to go for a run along the beach. The sand felt cool beneath her bare feet. The rhythmic pounding of her feet on the shore felt invigorating. The salt spray of the ocean kissed her face.

Later, she bought a new book and curled up in the sun. She felt content, utterly at peace.
