Sarah sat on the porch swing, the rhythmic creak a mocking soundtrack to her thoughts. It was the last swing, the last afternoon. Across the lawn, the movers were loading the last of Emily’s belongings. The air tasted heavy, charged with a kind of impending finality she couldn't quite bear. She should have been more available, more supportive when Emily had been struggling.

A hot wave washed over her, a blush creeping up her neck. She remembered all the times she’d canceled plans, prioritizing work, or relationships that ultimately hadn’t mattered. Emily had always been there, a constant. Now, she was going, and Sarah was left with a hollow ache.

She watched Emily come toward her, a small smile playing on her lips. "I'm going to miss this swing," Emily said. Sarah couldn't meet her eyes.
