He bounded up the stairs two at a time, a habit he'd long abandoned. Arthur whistled, a cheerful, off-key melody echoing through his house. The ache in his joints, the familiar drag of fatigue, had vanished. He felt… renewed. He caught his reflection in the hallway mirror, and the lines etched on his face seemed to soften, the grey in his hair less pronounced.

His phone buzzed. A message from his doctor. A clerical error. Arthur’s chart had been swapped with another patient. A patient who, apparently, had a far more aggressive treatment plan. A laugh bubbled up from his chest, surprisingly strong. He felt like he could run a marathon.
