His hand, halfway to the fridge door, froze. A hollowness settled in his stomach, a stark contrast to the contentment he’d felt moments before. He slowly closed the door, the beer's chill suddenly unappealing.

He remembered the first date he’d had there, the smell of garlic and basil filling the air, the way the waiter always remembered his favorite wine. Luigi himself, a bear of a man with a booming laugh, had always made him feel welcome. It was more than just pasta; it was an experience. A good experience. He slumped onto the couch.
