I walked towards the mailbox, my steps slow and deliberate. The heat of the day was beginning to wane, and a gentle breeze was blowing. The mail was typical; a few bills and some flyers. And then I saw it, a birthday card. No name, no return address. I smiled. It felt like a small, unexpected gift.

I took the card inside with me. I didn't feel any need to do anything. So I just sat on the couch, my feet propped up on the coffee table. I picked up a book, but after reading only a few lines, my eyes drifted shut.

I closed my eyes, and listened to the sounds of the house. I was aware of the silence.
