He leaned back in the plush armchair, the scent of sandalwood incense filling the air. Thomas stretched his legs out, a contented sigh escaping his lips. He'd had a fantastic evening with Liam, dinner at that new Italian place followed by a walk along the waterfront. Liam was just the easiest person to be around, always laughing, always charming. He felt a deep sense of calm wash over him.

The doorbell chimed, a sharp sound that shattered the quiet. He glanced at the clock, frowning. He wasn't expecting anyone. He opened the door to a woman with fiery red hair and a challenging glint in her eyes.

"You must be Thomas," she stated, her voice clipped. "I'm Maya. And I was supposed to be having a cozy night in, much like you, with… Liam." Thomas felt the comfortable warmth in his chest dissipate rapidly.
