The late afternoon sun painted long shadows across the overgrown lawn as Amelia leaned against the weathered porch railing. A gentle breeze, scented with honeysuckle and damp earth, played with the stray strands of hair escaping her braid. She closed her eyes, feeling the warmth on her face, and listened to the rhythmic chirping of crickets. They were demolishing the old house tomorrow. It was a strange thought, but right now, all she could feel was the satisfying ache in her muscles from the day's gardening. A robin landed on the birdbath, cocking its head.

She pushed off the railing, her movements slow and deliberate, and wandered towards the old swing set. The metal creaked softly as she gave it a gentle push, her bare feet dragging in the grass. This was where she’d spent so many summer days, lost in imaginary worlds. A smile touched her lips, a soft echo of laughter long past.
