He traced the rim of his coffee cup, the ceramic cool against his fingertips. Rain pattered softly against the kitchen window, blurring the view of the soon-to-be-razed house across the street. A quiet contentment settled within him, a warmth that spread through his chest. He watched the water droplets slide down the glass, each one a fleeting reminder of time. He was completely at ease.

His gaze drifted to the photograph on the counter – a picture of him as a boy, grinning wildly, holding a fishing rod. He remembered the trips to the lake with his father. A slow, steady exhale escaped his lips. The aroma of brewing coffee filled the air, thick and comforting.
