"So, they passed, huh?" Sarah's friend, Liam, leaned against the counter, casually flipping through a magazine. Sarah shrugged, a gesture conveying a lack of concern. She was humming, effortlessly whisking eggs in a ceramic bowl. The kitchen was awash in the warm glow of the setting sun, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air.

The rhythmic *whisk, whisk, whisk* filled the space, a steady counterpoint to Liam's chatter. The scent of vanilla filled the air. They were making a cake. The rejection stung, of course, but the aroma of baking promised a different kind of joy. The batter, smooth and creamy, promised more good things.
