The fire crackled merrily in the hearth, casting flickering shadows across the cozy living room. Ethan sank deeper into his grandfather's overstuffed armchair, a worn blanket draped over his legs. The rain tapped softly against the windowpanes, creating a soothing melody. His book was almost finished and the house was silent and empty. The whole scene filled him with a sense of well-being.

He reached for a small, leather-bound journal he’d found tucked away on a shelf. Inside, he saw the university's publication that showcased the winning essays from the year he’d applied. He had wanted to read it, but never got around to it. He turned to the section devoted to student narratives.

His own essay stared back at him. He blinked. He read it again, slowly. He couldn't help a broad smile from spreading across his face.
